There is a tame chinchilla loose in my neighborhood. We have been feeding it (we bought chinchilla food and have been very careful about what we give it) and since it is getting colder we are trying to catch it. She (we don't know the gender for sure just started calling it a she) knows us, and waits for us to come bring her food each day. She is very tame for being outside, she will run around us happily, takes food from my hand almost daily and has even started coming to the name we gave her (History) when we call.
I've looked up everything I can think of on chinchillas but I still have a few questions.
1-I have 2 large cages that I could use for a temporary cage for her. One is a rat cage, the other is a large crate type cage, both have plastic drop trays in the bottom. I will be getting a larger (probably custom built to fit my room) cage in the near future but until then, Which type of cage would work best?
2- I've read that chinchillas need a companion, but I've also read that if they've been alone for a long time they won't like another chinchilla in their space. Which is true? Do I need to go buy another chinchilla? I spend most of my time at home so she would get a lot of attention.
3-What is the best diet for a chinchilla? Right now she is getting pressed Timothy hay blocks (which she eats and plays with) alfalfa (clean, and fresh cut daily) as sort of a side supplement with the blocks. And then a few treats; carrots, grapes, raisins, apples, and the tiniest slice of celery. She doesn't get all of those at once that is just what he's had since we found her.
I've read everything I can and searched online for hours at a time and I am getting conflicting information on almost everything I read. Any information would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.
