What do the new VW diesels actually get for mpg?

I am looking to buy a new car to use as a heavy-use daily driver. My interest in VW diesels spawned when I bought my 77 Rabbit diesel. Throughout the 140K miles I've driven it, it has averaged exactly 67.4 mpg (it's been a running spreadsheet). My buddy has a 98 Jetta TDI that gets in the mid 50s. Do the new ones get at least 50mpg or are the EPA estimates, which place them around that of a midsize gasoline-burning sedan, actually accurate?
