What do think about Volkswagen New Beetle?

I am about to purchase my second car. As of now I have a Toyota Camry which is really great and all. But I have always wanted a Volkswagen New Beetle. I just didn't have the money for it to be my first car. I plan on Purchasing one in the next 2 to 3 weeks. I would like between a 1999 to a 2003 or so. I have read some great things about them and also some horrible stuff. I really do not want to get a car that is just going to break down. I need something reliable. My fiance is a Diesel Mechanic so obviously he is going with me to get one. I would like real honest opinions on the Volkswagen Beetle? Whatever you know about them please let me know, I do not want to make a mistake. I am about to graduate from college so I need very reliable transportation. I want something pretty but also a good running car. Thanks!!
