What do you do when the vitreous humor (the white part of your eye) swells up?

My son went to soccer practice and scratched his eye, this caused sweeling. The babysitter put him to bed, but he woke up and I looked and realized, his eyeball was swelling up. Its the left side of his right eye. Not the eye lids or the tissues around his eye, but the actual eye. Which I looked up and tis called vitreoud humor. It has swollen up full of liquid, its so swollen he cant close his eyelids completely. My younger son has terrible allergies, but only the tissues around his eye swelled like this never his actual eye. I have given him 2 tsps of benadryl, then used a hot compress, and now a cold compress. Swelling has reduced some, but he is falling asleep from the meds. Should I take him to the Emergency room or should I wait and take him to his pediatrician ASAP?? Anyone that has had this problem before please let me know any and all info
