What do you think produced Saturn's rings?

I am wondering why they are along the plane of the equator, at least it seems they are. If it was a collision of moons or a moon with an asteroid or comet, it does not seem like that would be so, since the comet or asteroid would have no relation to the plane of Saturn's equator, and would have moved any moon which was in such an orbit.
