I know it doesn't prove health or genetic screening having been done on sire and dam, it doesn't prove good husbandry as the mills near me in Pennsylvania sell AKC puppies to the public in their showrooms.

It doesn't even prove or guarantee that the puppy will be a good or decent representative of the breed.

What does AKC mean, what does it prove, what does it guarantee? What's the purpose?

AKC is a registry. They don't offer guarantees. They track pedigrees, offer a place for competition and educational services.

Breeders provide health guarantees. Breeders control the genetics, appearance and temperament.

AKC means American Kennel Club, it proves that both parents were registered with the AKC, it guarantees nothing, the purpose--if done correctly--ensures quality animals are being bred to produce quality pups. But the papers are just that, papers. They're only as good as the person filling them out.
