...middle of a score? For instance, in this example, violas I and II, along with bass stave of the piano, feature this. Is this instructing them to play in the treble clef, with violins I, II and the treble piano stave?
Uh, no. It's a large b followed by a bracket, occupying all 5 lines of the staff. Since the score at this is highly dissonant, with a slow, grotesque string glissando, there's no key signature.
And, no unfortunately, this is not a published score, so that won't help. I have hand copied this from (with permission) a certain university archive.
