Who, What, When, Why, How......?

1st Peter 3:18

"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit:
by which also He went and preached unto the saints in prison;
which sometimes were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the Ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water."

Thanks,
WHO ARE THE SPIRITS??? IN THE TIME OF NOAH?

The Gospel of Christ (blood of Christ) went back through the ages and forgave those of the other dispensations. Those of the Patriarchal and the law of Moses. The prison is the Hayden world where the souls of mankind are held until the judgment.

This is one of the most controversial verses in scripture.

My stab at it, is in Noah's time the LAW had not been given.

Scripture states where there was NO LAW, there was sin, but people were not aware of Sin.
Therefore they were not held accountable for their sins.Without the Law, there is no sin.

When Jesus died,he descended into Sheol, the place of the dead.

And HE preached the GOSPEL to those held there, that they also might have a chance to accept HIM, and Grace, and have the same chance for eternal life as we do.

This is MY opinion...........others may have better explanations.

This is a debatable topic- possibly those souls who believed without knowing Him -pre incarnate Christ
saints such as Noah, Elijah, David, etc. and thousands of those we will never know about were
paid a visit by the Lord of Lords in Abraham's Bosom-the nice holding place after death. This is not the same as purgatory, which was a man-made concoction.

I think it refers to those who are imprisoned to sin. To release the captives means to release those who are captives of sin

Most people believe that Christ was in hell during the three days that he was in the tomb. Some believe that spirits were given the opportunity to choose to follow him, who had died prior to his death and salvation.

This is discussing the Savior's mission to the spirit world, where all people go when they die. There was no resurrection until the Savior overcame death and was resurrected. He went between the time he was crucified on the cross and his resurrection.

He limited his preaching to those who were considered "saints" (and here the word carries the same meaning that Paul used in his epistles to the "saints" at the various churches) -- the members or followers of Jesus Christ. It is believed that the Savior's mission was known throughout history, although there is scant scriptural evidence to support that assertion in the Bible.

It is further believed that those so taught by Jesus Christ then were assigned to go to all the spirits, good or bad, and teach them the Gospel message so that all could be judged "according to the quick and the dead" at the judgment. They would then have the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior or to reject him.

Add: the spirits are those who once lived as mortals on earth prior to Jesus' own mortal mission. It also includes all those who die without a knowledge of Jesus Christ or his mission and is not limited in time or scope.

After Christ's death, before his resurrection, he visited the spirits in spirit prison (ie Hell), the spirits of the people who were disobedient to the commandments. He went there to teach them.
