What does it mean on tdi bug when the temp light turns red and beeps 3 times?

Whenever I turn on my car the temp gauge goes from blue to red and beeps 3 times I live in Michigan it's been cold. I haven't changed the oil in about 9 months because for 3 months I couldn't drive it. One of my guesses is maybe it's telling me to change the oil?
