What does the R4i kernel download for DSi do?

I have a DSi which is version 1.4.1U. I understand that I need to purchase an R4i 1.4.1 for my DSi, but I keep hearing people talking about some kernel download for it. What is this? And what does it do? Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I'm looking into buying an R4i as soon as possible.
