Recently I rescued a blue pitt that is 2 years old. I brought him home and he has started to suffer from allergies. I took him to the vet and they stated that it is food, well I have tried every type of food for over 30 days each and nothing is working. Does anyone have advice. I have given him steroids (2 times) and benadryl, but steroids will kill his kidneys so I wont do that again. He is my baby and I need help. Any advice?

steroids are the only thing that i know of that works. If you dont want to do that i guess just wait until allergy season is over.

Well some dogs can have reactions to cleaning products, and any shampoo things you might use on him. Keep in mind that dogs can get into ANYTHING. so if your neighbours put weed poison or any other thing like that aroung their backyard, and it gets into yours. thar can make yor dogs sick. Careful when feeding. STRICTLY DOG FOOD!

Here check out this site. Scroll down the page when you get to it. lots of info here! Hope your puppy gets better!

Did you ever had another dog? They may be reacting to the smell. Or if you have been feeding it human food, it may be allergic to some food. Also dust. Try to work with natural dog food. With no beefy chunks or old juice. Try something with veggies and lamb this could be the Solution.

It takes 8 weeks for a change of food to show a significant difference. You have to stay with a food for at least that long to see if its going to help. Short term steroids will not "kill his kidneys" . An occasional shot of triamcinolone will help with the itching for a short time until you can get him on a food that works for him. Every brand of dog food has a sensitive skin diet and there are specialized prescription foods that have hydrolyzed proteins that are for specifically for treating allergy's in dogs. You have to stick with it. Food allergy's is one of the hardest things to treat but switching around foods will not help the situation. Ask your vet to refer you to someone who specializes in treating food allergy dogs. Good Luck

Have your vet run allergy tests on him to determine exactly which food is causing a problem. If you can pinpoint it, you know which food you need to eliminate from his diet.

If you can't afford the allergy testing, try a grainless dog food with a meat source that isn't very common -something like duck and potato, fish and potato, venison, buffalo, etc. And keep him on the food for 3 months before deciding whether or not the food is working for him.

I know a lot of vets will recommend a 3 or 4 week trial period for foods, but often times it takes longer until you can see results.

Good luck and best wishes to you and your baby.
