What is a canary's natural coloration?

A petshop around here is selling a canary that looks more like a female house sparrow. I asked about it and they said canaries look like sparrows when they have not been fed feather-dyeing foods. I know canaries are fed dyed seeds to enhance their colors, but I've never heard of them looking like sparrows first. Is this true, or could this bird actually be a sparrow?
