What is a jailbroken iphone/itouch?

I don't plan on doing it to one. In fact, I don't even own one. I'm just wondering what it is.
 
they do something to it to be able to install certain programs. My brother did it to his touch before they had the app store, but it voids the warranty. Now there isnt much of a need since they have the app store
