What is Anderson Cooper Doing on CNN at 2am Eastern?

I am watching the coverage of the Plane Crash in Buffalo NY, on CNN and at first they had people from CNN international on there and then about 130am Anderson Cooper was on air (looks like they called him in), does anybody know the protocol for when something like this happens on how they bring in Anchors, I would think that they have people who are on-call but like the weekend anchors and not Anderson Cooper
