What is ESP on/in a jeep?

I just got an 07 Jeep Compass, there is an ESP Button. What does this do? What is ESP? There was no owners manual in the car of course. Also, any of you have a compass, could you also tell me how to engage 4WD? Thank you for your help!
Again, if any of you guys have one do you know your MPG? Thank you again.
