I have an 87 jeep wrangler that i bought about 6 months ago. When i first bought it, it would clunk a little while in 4 wheel drive. I got stuck in the snow and ice the other day and tried to put it into 4 wheel drive and it goes in as smooth as ever but the front wheels don't spin. As i was stuck i had to get the jeep out so i left it in 4 low and backed out of the ditch i was in. Now there is a clunking sound every time that i drive over 5 mph and it sounds like it's coming from the area of the transfer case. I'm not sure what's going on and any input would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like the chain in the transfer case is bad or broken

I'm not sure how a transfer case works, but since its not engaging I would troubleshoot with any solenoid or any other electrical component involved. After that, the gears might not be contacting eachother due to something that is 'stuck'. Hope its not costly.
