First lets understand that there are many different styles of Kempo (some styles spell it kenpo). The word kempo/kenpo is a generic term like karate. Kempo/kenpo mean:
1) Fist Way
2) Law of the Fist
or something similar

Many kempo systems teach all phases of combat. By that i mean all four ranges of unarmed combat (kicking range, punching range, trapping range, grappling range). Also included is ground fighting and weapons defense. Some karate styles can trace their origins to kempo or kenpo systems. As for limits. It is purely up to the instructor and how much of the whole system he has been taught. Kempo is as good or bad as any other martial art based purely on each individual and how good or bad he is.

Some of the common Kempo/Kenpo systems are:

Ed Parker Kenpo, Kosho-Ryu Kenpo, .....

However, there are some rare systems that do not have common roots with any of the well known styles. The system i study for instance began around 1300 in China, It moved to Korea in the 1600's, then to Japan in the 1905's. From there it was brought to the U.S.A. by professor Albert C. Church. The system is known today as Shorinji-Tetsu-Ken-Kamishin-Ryu (Shaolin-Iron-Fist-Divine/godly Heart-School)
My style is even less known being based mainly on it.

Kempo / Kenpo - It means law or way of the fist.
It is similar to karate and kung fu, but also incorprates some jujitsu.
Most kempo / kenpo styles incorporate low kicks, fast repetitious hand techniques, and take downs.

if im not mistaken, kempo is a branch of karate. if you want to see kempo in action, take a look at a chuck liddel as his base for striking is kempo.

It is basically Japanese Kung Fu.

Kempo, or Kenpo, is Japanese for 'Fist Way' or Chinese Fist.

So Chinese introduced Kung Fu into Japan, and the Japanese modified it over the years to their way of fighting, introducing the Japanese fondness for linear striking techniques, along with the circular methods favored by the Chinese.

I've watched Chuck Liddell workout in his so-called Kempo, and it is not Kempo at all. In fact I have never seen Chuck Liddell perform a single Kempo technique in any of his UFC matches. Rampage Jackson brutalized Liddell with nothing more than boxing/wrestling techniques which Kempo is known to defeat.

In the States, the word "kempo", like the word 'Jujitsu' is very loosely used.

Ed Parker is considered the father of USA Kempo.

P.S. I used to work out with sensei Billy Blanks at his Kempo dojo down in Quncy, Massachusetts (I'm from Boston) in the early '70s (he sported a 'fro then).
