what is proper operating temperture for my pontiac?

my temp gauge goes up to 280,,my car somtimes after driving for a few hours and stop and go traffic,,the gauge will read 220 or 240,,is my car running hot? when i park i do not smell anything, the hood is not hot. it is a 1992 pontiac grand prix with a 3.4 liter,,144000 miles
