what is the anime with the fighter robot dogs?

it used to come on cartoon network in the late 90's.it would come on at around 6:00 am and then pokemon would come on. it is sort of like gundam but the characters get inside these huge robotic dogs,wolfs.or cats. and the fight each other using missles and stuff.

Chances are, this is going to be wrong, but the only one I can think of is SWAT Cats. xD Probably wrong though.

Well that, and there's also Voltron, but the problem with Voltron is that the robots combine into the gundam-esque figure, instead of being gundams by themselves.
