What is the attraction to cruises?

This is a genuine question by the way. I do not understand why cruises are so popular. Back in the olden days before airplanes, they would be cool. But now that you can jet anywhere in the world and visit any country just as fast as the next, it seems like going on a cruise would be just like staying in a really nice hotel*--that you can't leave. I'd rather spend $5000 laying on a beach all day in Fiji, not sitting in a hotel room waiting to lay on a beach for an hour before you have to get back on the ship. It seems like a cruise is one of those things that seems relaxing, but by the time you're on the ship you realize you aren't relaxing at all. What do you think?

*Also should mention you have to shell out big bucks to stay on a nice cruise--the cheap ones are like staying in a not-so-nice hotel that you can't leave.
Although Disney cruises do seem fun.

First, you don't sit in your room waiting to reach a port. There is activities such as movies, games, sunbathing by the pools, spa treatments, art auctions, lectures of interesting subjects,bingo, gambling, live theater acts, eating some of the best food ever, high tea, or just reading a book or working out in the gym. There is also dancing, singing, looking at the dolphins or whales and much much more. So what a cruise is really about is going to several cities and seeing much in a short period of time like 1 week, or longer. It is not about getting there in a hurry. A cruise itself is a destination, not just a means of transportation. That is why I love cruising. BTW train travel is also wonderful and also a destination, not just transportation. Also the "cheap" cruises are NOT like staying in a not so nice hotel at all. Everything is luxury, beautiful and top notch on a cruise ship. One more thing. You do not stay in a port for an hour and then leave. More like from 8am till 5pm or sometimes through the night. I guess you would have to actually go on a cruise to see it is not at all what you think it is.

I like cruises for the one big fact that you unpack once.I like the fact that you can eat what you want, where you want, and dress the way you want.All the food you want, in different areas to your liking.I like relaxing by the pool with a drink.I love looking out onto the water in my balcony room.I love the service.I feel like a queen.
