What is the best Caribbean island for an adventure based vacation?

My college friend and I are having a very hard time sorting through all of the possible Caribbean islands. We want to stay on the beach and relax. But we also want to go snorkeling, hiking, para-sailing, canyoning and explore the local culture. We want to stay around $1500 for the trip. Any suggestions?
