What is the best way to introduce a new dog to an existing dog family?

I have a two year old neutered male jack russell terrier mix that we have had since he was 6 weeks old. Last week we rescued a small stray unaltered female terrrier mix. After keeping her isolated and getting her check out by a vet we decided to introduce them. I sat on the floor and let them sniff each other. She was climbing on my lap when my existing male dog came up to me and she growled. Once they got to the sniffing each other phase my male lunged toward her in a playful manner and she attacked him. I had to pull her off of him. I placed a muzzle on her and tried continuing the introduction however my male wanted nothing to do with her and would not go around her. I was wanting to keep the female as I have already sunk $300 into vet care and pet products but I am not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?
Can this be fixed if I take the female through a training class?
He weighs 20lb and she weighs 14lb but she had him on his back. He was very fearful afterwards.
