Etymology: Middle English pol, polle, from Middle Low GermanThis did remind me of the origin of the word "Politics".... which everyone knows comes from the words "Poly" meaning many, and "Ticks" meaning blood sucking parasites.

from the Greek 'polis,' which was the place where the political occured, around the polis: a point, or a marker, in the middle of the city. of course, in ancient Greece, the only people who were political were Greek men with money and land. Women and the poor and the crazy and Non-Greeks were 'apolis,' outside of the political, and had no voice. You can see holdovers from this today.
