What is the most inexpensive and easiest vehicle to repair?

I am in the market for a used car (tired of making payments on a new car that I HAVE to put gas in at the rate it is - everyone is getting rich and Im getting poorer!) I have my eyes on a garage kept 1988 Volvo station wagon. I opened the hood and the engine and parts seem very accessible. Wanted a minivan but I hear that they are expensive to repair because the engine is so compact. What is a good solid car that I can buy that would be inexpensive to repair, or fairly easy for my husband and son to fix?
 
if you want that then you better get out of these new cars today. i have a 1988 oldsmobile delta 88 and it,s not too bad to work on. not like some of these cars today.
