what is the proper/most fuel efficient way to use the gas pedal?

when driving, is it more economical to accelerate, and keep your foot on the pedal once you hit the speed you need, and maintain it there????

Ive had the habit of accelerating, and sorta taking my foot on and off the gas to keep the speed.... not just leave it on the pedal

whats proper?
