What is the role of technology in the future of America?

Lately, I have come to the possible conclusion that the only way America will be able to compete on a global level is through innovations in technology/sciences (medicine.) Because if we think about it, we import mostly everything from China; we get our cars from Germany and Japan - American car models are all but obsolete; etc. So my question is, what do you think is the importance of technology for the future of America? Do you think we will be able to keep our competitive edge through the development of more advanced technology?

Thank you in advance.

It probably depends on how much we stifle the minds of our children through standardized testing & education programs like "No Child Left Behind" which is geared to raise the test levels of low-average students, but holds back the top achieving students.
