What is the symbolism of an Indian Elephant?

I am getting a tattoo of an elephant along the side of my stomach, and was very curious of it's symbolism. I have heard it means the representation of ones truest self, and I very much connect to that. But I just was curious as to the other meanings... Also I figured, I should know this much before I get it permanently drawn on my body.
