what is this alien sci fi movie from the 90s or maybe early 2000s?

This is what I can remember ---

The main characters go into space and are somehow infected with an alien or something. I think.

One of the main characters is a male and has blond hair, and at one point in the movie he decides to commit suicide. he sits on the back deck of a cabin, takes a rifle and shoots himself in the face. It shows his face exploding and then reconstructing itself.

What is that movie??
 
SPECIES 2 from 1998, directed by Peter Medak. However, the character that blew his head off (Patrick Ross, played by Justin Lazard) had dark hair. I remember the scene you described, very gory.
