What is with the music downloader Ares?

Okay, so like 2 years ago I had an Ares account. And I recently re-installed it. It kept my whole library saved. Except now, it says I have to pay a fee and have an account to download any new songs! Or that I need an activation code or something. I used to get all of the songs for free! What happened? And is there any way to get around this?
