What kind of damage can an IED cause? (For a storyline for a script)?

I'm writing a script and I have this character named Ethan that was injured in an IED attack in Iraq or Afghanistan. 3 people died and 2 survived (including Ethan). I'm doing research for my script. I know that IED's can cause a lot of damage (especially brain damage, and loss of limbs) but I'm wandering what other kind of damage IED's can cause?

This character Ethan I don't want him to be terribly injured but injured enought to be in a coma and also have maybe a few wounds.
