What kind of engine oil does my 1982 Cadillac Coupe deVille (4.1 L V8) need?

I recently purchased this vehicle from a private owner, and it has the original manual. The manual refers the driver to the information printed on the oil fill cap, but it must be a replacement cap, because it is blank. The oil level was getting slightly low, and I had to put something in there, so I went with SAE 10W-30, but a co-worker said that 10W-40 would be better for an eight cylinder engine. Any suggestions?
 
15w 30 in the summer and 5 in the winter helps with cold starts
