what makes an internet troll an internet troll?

why do some people think that it's okay to just go off ranting at, insulting and yelling at complete strangers on the internet? i just think it's incredibly rude, thoughtless, and cowardly to a disturbing degree. is it that their lives are just that sad that they need to troll?
 
Or because they have low self-esteem and try to make themselves feel better by insulting and putting others down.
