It started in the 1940's and was a hit. Later it began to decrease in popularity, but a movie re-introduced the slinky. What was it?
 
Toy Story? Purley because of Slinky Dog, who made my mum buy my brother a slinky XD
 
I'm not sure if this is quite what you're referring to, but when I was a little kid (in the 80's), slinkies were fun but died out in popularity, until the early 90's, when Ace Ventura drew a whole bunch of attention to the slinky, and suddenly everybody wanted one ... at least, that's how it seemed to me
