what settings to use on Final Cut Express for HD videos?

I have HD videos recorded on a SAMSUNG video machine that I've downloaded onto an external hard drive. I have a MACBOOK PRO with Final Cut Express 4 and would like to combine all the clips but the rendering takes FOREVER!!! Are there settings for HD videos that I am not aware of??? Please help!!!!
