What should I do in order to be able to do a split?

I've always wanted to be able to do one...a few years ago I could sort of do one when I took gymnastics classes, but now I'm a lot less flexible. What should I do to be able to do a split again? If I were to just go as far down into a split as possible each day for about 10 minutes, would I eventually be able to do a split?
