OK so here's the short story: I drive a 1998 mazda millenia and my NYS inspection is expired. I went to get it renewed as usual but the check engine light is on, my mechanic checks the code and tells me its the "knock sensor". I trust him because I've gone to him for years plus he printed out the DMV paper that says the knock sensor on it. Originally he turned off the check engine light off and told me to drive it 40-50 miles and come back if the light is still on, i can just go ahead an get the inspection. but instead it would come back on after a few miles.

So then i was prepared to shell out 150-200 to get the knock sensor replaced, until he told me that its all the way on the bottom of the car (or something like that), and he told he has to take out the whole engine to get to it. and the whole job will cost $600, which i don't have. Now i've been driving with an expired inspection sticker and i've already been hit with a $50 ticket.

So my question for you is, what can i do? i don't have the $600 to fix that stupid sensor and i can't keep on getting stupid tickets. Is there a magical trick i can do with the check engine light or something and get my car inspection passed?

thanks alot for your help.
