What should my independent study about population trends focus on?

I'm trying to get an independent study for my Population Trends class and I'm having trouble narrowing down a topic. I figured I could look at say 5 different states within the USA and see how the state itself and its major cities have changed since 1990. If someone could help me out that would be awesome. I just need feedback I guess.
