What steps do I take at an Airport?

Hi, this will be my first time flying from Seattle to New York and I have never flown before. What steps do I take at an airport? I'm flying "United", so I need to look for the desk labeled United, right?

Also, what do I do during a layover? I will trade planes in Denver.
