What to do about stray cat?

There is a sweet cat with no tail hanging around outside my apartment. Each day I find her outside, she rolls over and lets me pet her and pick her up. She is a sweetheart, young, and completely healthy looking. She has no collar. She wanders behind the bushes after being petted for awhile and disappears. I hope that she is not missing from her home. How do I know if her owners are simply letting her wander, or if she is lost? I don't want to take her in yet either way because she would give fleas and mites to my cats, but I would in the long run...but I don't want to swipe someones cat. Or I could bring it to animal control to see if it's microchipped, but I would hate to insult an owner who simply allows their cat free range. What would you do?

If an owner does not collar their cat then they take the risk of someone swiping it, even if it's micro chipped they don't always check for them, and microchips wander around the body over time. I used to work at a shelter and you'd be amazed at how many chips were in legs instead of their napes. If she has fleas or mites and you pick her up you risk transferring the parasites. If I were you I would take her to a vet and ask them to check for a chip, most places will just do a quick scan without charging you. If she doesn't have a chip, put a cheap collar and tag on her. If no one calls you to complain or say it's their cat, then congrats you have a new pet. Good Luck.

cats do not have to be strays.
some simply remove their own collar (possible)
just let her be.
cats are not as bad as roaming dogs.

The best you can do for her is take her to a no-kill shelter,if she has any owners, that will be the first people that have a lost animal will look.Or,you can take her in for a while, and post posters with pics on them of her stating you have found her,and if the owners want her,to contact you.Put them on poles all thru out the neighborhood.

Good luck :)

Make a poster with the picture of the cat and write cat found give your phone number definitely NOT your address and if the owner calls tell them to pick it up or take it to a no kill animal shelter if you have a local one.
