What type of card do you need in order to have a phone on contract?

Okay so my mam don't have one of the cards that you can pay for things in the shop with on the little machines she only has the one that she can take money out of the little banks in the walls... is this okay to have a phone on contract? she does have things going out on direct debit so would it work?
