In the scarlet letter, why does dimmesdale hold his secret in for so long and then finally confess to it? what was a factor that made him confess to it?

He admits his sin because, he is about to die and he planed to do so because he was about to leave the new world for Europe.
A factor, the fact that he is a priest, and he has sinned, also Pearl is his daughter.
Why did he hold on to the secret for so long? Well, because everyone will know, and he is seen like an angel on earth by everyone, which will permanently ruin his reputation! People cared so much about their reputation, that some would even die for it... Also he is afraid of what will happen to him after he dies (judgment).
