What will upgrading RAM do?

I already have 4GBs and it is expandable to 8GBS. I want to do this to improve HD video and for gaming. Since I do not have a dedicated graphics chipset and it is a mobile, it uses a portion of RAM to power graphics. If I expand to 8GB's will it improve gaming and video performance?
