far as i can tell, ALL of them snicker, laugh or smirk when this subject comes up

prob. 50% - their laughter is all over womens blogs, the whole audience laughed on "the talk" - a lot of women get off on this

I don't find any humor in it at all, and I think the women of "The Talk" were not taking the news story seriously when they laughed at it. Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy Osbourne's wife, is a jaded old rock star's wife with a cynical side, and when she laughed it probably led the younger women on that show to laugh along with her. They've all since apologized for it. I don't think the average woman finds that funny, at least not when faced with the hard, cold facts of the crime.

probably A LOT!

my mom laughed at Hard Candy, so i'm pretty sure its the same scenario

I don't believe a huge number of women or men find mutilation funny; but some people obviously do or act like they do. Some people are immature; and let's face it, a few people are sick.

It reminds me of how many people (both men and women) act like rape of the other gender is something to make jokes about, and deny it happens...It seems like, if something violent and/or sexual makes people uncomfortable, they try to deny it, minimize it and/or mock it. Maybe we can grow up a bit as a society, and show more compassion.
