What would happen to prisoners if marijuana was legalized?

If marijuana was legalized what would happen to everyone who is in jail for marijuana possession? Would they be set free? Or would they have to stay in jail because they broke the law before the law was changed? Just curious.
 
If marijuana was legalized....that's a mighty big "if" :) While it does make sense on many levels to do this, we're about 3 generations into the anti-marijuana conditioning the government chose to lean on....which is the main reason legalization will never happen - the population at large would simply not stand for it.

As for convicts who are currently in jail for cannabis related felonies....charges and sentencing wouldn't be repealed and are not retroactive, regardless of legalization. Perhaps reduced sentences on whatever time remaining they have but they'd likely be staying right where they are.
