A cruiser bike is a bike that is made purely for comfort and joy riding. They normally put the rider in a straight upright position. Most cruisers will either be single speed or have a three speed internally geared rear hub (no derailleur but you still get three gears). Brakes are either a single rear rim brake or the type where you pedal backwards to stop (I forget what they are called). Also cruisers generally have big wide tires to absorb more bumps and such. Cruiser bikes are made for those people who just want to slowly roam around the neighborhood. I would not recommend one for college. Mountain bikes generally have at least 21 speeds, put you a litter lower on the bike, flat bars, better braking, etc. You can get suspension if you like. However, since I am a college student and know how much college bikes get beat up. You might just want to spend a little money to get your current bike fixed up. That way, when your bike gets beat up from being at college to long, which it will, it won't bother you as much. And as a final note, go to your local bike shop, bring your bike with, talk with them about getting a new bike versus fixing your old one. They will be more than happy to help.
