What's the best compressed format for videos other than Divx?

I recently downloaded Any Video Converter, and I wanted to know what the most compressed format would be other than Divx? I downloaded a movie (Ratatouille) for my son and when I tried to burn it on Nero, it was WAY over the limit, even though the file size is 701MB.

The movie I downloaded is AVI format.

Also, let's say mpeg2 is the most compressed format, can I do it more than once to compress it even more? I heard you could, but I don't know.

Any help would be great!
SORRY I FORGOT TO ADD THAT I CAN ONLY BURN ONTO CD-R'S. AND I CANNOT USE XVID OR DIVX.

I reckon mkv format is about as good as you can get quality wise, unfortunately mkv is not used as widely as avi.

Edit :
mp4 format is very good quality and takes up less space and more suitable for 700mb discs.
