Whats the fastest iPhone OS for the 3G?

I have a 3g and its sooo freaking slow, respond time is so slow most the time that its annoying. A 300mhz computer would respond quicker. Even after a hard reset and clearing the history and cache. Hell I even got a new phone, same problem.

I want to put the fastest OS I can on here, so I can use my phone, and not worry about lagging so much. I don't care about features at all. Something legit, my phone is NOT jailbroken.

Also what could I do to save contacts, pictures.... tell me the steps I need to do and the OS I need.

Well if you can get access to 2.0, which I doubt since most require at least 3.0 as a minimum nowadays then you could. Although 4.2.1 is said to be quick enough.

iTunes will deal with the rest.
