Whats the point of arguing about bands?

I mean unless your debating like which drummer or guitarist has the better technique, or who's faster or more technical, isn't it kind of meaningless to aruge whats the better band since thats just based on personal opinion or taste? What if I like Metallica's Load - St. Anger phase? (I dont), what if I think Led Zeppelin was overrated and a waste of time? (I certainly do not), what if I think Green Day are the greatest song writers and composers in the history of mankind? (HELL NO). How can you validly criticize someone's personal preferences and act like your the one who's right?
 
I think that people get so heated and defensive over music because of the role that music has in our lives. To someone who thinks Green Day are the best composers, your point will be invalid, because to them Green Day has had such a profound impact on the people who they have become, just like if someone really loves Led Zeppelin, anyone who says that they are overrated or a waste of time because Zep has affected them so strongly that they feel that by calling that band a waste of time you are calling them a waste of time. We often associate with a band in a way that defines us, naming your daughter Michelle after the Beatles song, or tattooing Black Flag lyrics on your body, that band becomes a part of us, I guess that's why we argue... about... anything, including bands.

Everyone has their own opinion and they want to flaunt that like they discovered the band themselves. Arguing is pointless
 
People get cocky and they like to think they are the best...it's an unavoidable flaw of mankind, unfortunately those of us who see it have to suffer. Oh well :)
