What's wrong with my phone, it's a LG Ally?

Okay so I recently bought a phone off a friend. & I FULLY charged it & not even ten minutes went by and it shut off. I'll turn it on and it'll be a red color about to die. Well I'll take the battery out for a few minutes & it'll have over 50 percent of battery. A few seconds will go by & it'll CUT off again. It won't hold charge for nothing. Only time it does so is when it's plugged into a charger. It works perfectly fine plugged up, but as soon as I unplug it 5 minutes later it's cutting off. Is this problem my battery or is it my phone?
