The Indy 500 came down to the final lap on Sunday in unusual fashion. Leading by almost 4 seconds with just one trip around the track left, JR Hildebrand made the first three turns just fine. He then came up upon rookie Charlie Kimball going much slower as they approached the last turn. Hildebrand should have backed off — he had a big enough lead, but instead he moved to the outside to make the pass.

Hildebrand went to high and slammed into the outside wall. Dan Wheldon passed Hildebrand’s crumpled car and headed to victory. Hildebrand’s smashed car skidded across the line 2.1 seconds later to take second place.

It was the second Indy 500 win for Wheldon, who also won in 2005.
